The first official Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons has been set for June 21-23 in Vienna, Austria. This meeting has been delayed several times by Covid-19 health concerns, but it now looks quite hopeful that these dates will hold.
Events will be scheduled around the First Meeting, much of which is expected to focus on Articles 6 and 7 of the Treaty, dealing with the positive obligations to provide care for those who have been affected by the use and testing of nuclear weapons, and the responsibility to clean up the environment contaminated by the use and testing of nuclear weapons.
Austria will host an international conference on the humanitarian impacts of nuclear weapons on June 20, and ICAN will also sponsor a civil society forum on June 18-19.
